Swatches & Review: Shades of Phoenix 'The Places She Will Go'

Hi lovelies!

I have a gorgeous new collection from Shades of Phoenix to show you today, full of subtle sparkle and fabulous colour. The collection is inspired by the places and locations of Alice in Wonderland, something creator Teneil is a huge fan of!

Shades of Phoenix - The Places She Will Go

CRIMS

Shades of Phoenix - Crims

Hello sparkly red! Inspired by the castle of The Red Queen, Crims is a highly pigmented shimmering red with tiny iridescent sparks. I fell in love with this bright and bold shade the moment it hit my nails. Teneil has a real knack for creating beautiful reds and this is another must have.

Shades of Phoenix - Crims

Crims is easily opaque in two coats and takes little effort to remove for something so sparkly. The formula is beautiful, smooth and with the consistency of honey making application super easy. This was nice and smooth with one coat of top coat.

MARMOREAL

Shades of Phoenix - Marmoreal

Inspired by the palace of The White Queen, Marmoreal is a shimmery white with a lovely soft iridescent sparkle that bring flashes of pink and blue. This one feels like glistening snow resting gently on your nails, a beautiful wintry white.

Marmoreal is opaque in three coats, with a similar consistency to Crims. I was a bit hasty with my application and experienced some minor balding, though I'm confident if I'd just waited one more minute between coats this wouldn't have happened. Again, one coat of top coat was sufficient.

OUTLANDS

Shades of Phoenix - Outlands

Inspired by Wonderland's barren desert region, Outlands is a big punch of electric banana yellow with a metallic shimmer. The colour payoff in this polish is absolutely incredible, needing only two coats for rock solid opacity.

This had a nice formula for a metallic shade, which I often find to be really runny. Outlands is more of a creme consistency so there was no flooding my cuticles and no pulling or balding. Like most shimmery metallics this does have a bit of a brushstrokey finish. but if you want a really opaque bright yellow I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this. I didn't use top coat for my swatches of Outlands.

TULGEY WOOD

Shades of Phoenix - Tulgey Wood

Inspired by the home of the Jabberwocky, Tulgey Wood is a fantastically vibrant blue with a softly feathered appearance. This also has a gorgeous subtle sparkle but it would not cooperate with my camera at all! The finish is really unique, looking slightly textured while feeling quite smooth.

Shades of Phoenix - Tulgey Wood

Tulgey Wood had a similar honeyed consistency to Crims which I really loved. I did three coats for full opacity however I think two would have been fine for regular wear (ie. not under two big light bulbs), and one coat of top coat.

UNDERLAND

THUNK. That was my jaw hitting the floor!

Inspired by the 'Wonderland' of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Underland is a distinctly dark shade of brown, just a few clicks shy of black. There are red/purple undertones that give the polish a beautiful warmth, and a generous sprinkle of iridescent sparkle provides a lovely contrast.

That beautiful colour is the result of just two coats! The formula is again fabulous, it glides on the nail effortlessly and self levels well.

I used a generous coat of Peita's Polish Quick, Gloss Me Up! to top coat this and all the other shades that needed it.

Overall I'm really impressed with this collection thanks to the incredible pigmentation of the shades, and the beautiful formula. You definitely don't need to be an Alice in Wonderland fan to appreciate these colours, the basic palette will work well as staple colours and be excellent for nail art given their opacity.

The Places She Will Go collection will be available from shadesofphoenix.indiemade.com tomorrow night (June 17), get in quick before the shop closes later in the month while Teneil takes maternity leave!
