I am SO excited to be showing you the new collection from Moonstone Nail Polish today! I've loved this brand for some time so I was thrilled when Caitlin contacted me to swatch the Wicked Witches collection, inspired by 6 of the brilliant, clever, badass witches from the Harry Potter universe.
What do you think? Which witch is which?
The one really wicked witch of the collection is Bellatrix. Cruel and sadistic Bellatrix Lestrange is one of the true forces of evil in the Potterverse, her fierce temper only made more dangerous by her intelligence and talent. As one of the most compelling characters in the series it's no surprise her polish namesake is dark yet brilliant.
The base is dark, not quite the blackest of blacks, and filled with purple and green flakie sparks - much like the unforgivable curses that fly from her wand so frequently. The finish is like a heavy purple slate filled with little lights. Only two coats to get the perfect depth and darkness. Madam Lestrange herself would be proud.
Undoubtedly this fiery red had to be a Weasley! Ginevra (you'll know her as Ginny) is the youngest of the Weasley family, smart, naturally talented and quick witted. The first female Weasley in generations was brilliant in her own right, never to be outshone by her brothers.
The brazen red base is filled with gold flakies and some gold and fuchsia shimmer, which gives a slight orange tint to perfectly match Ginny's perfect mane of red hair. Ginevra is another easy two coater.
Hermione Granger is nothing short of brilliant. I can't think of a positive descriptor that doesn't apply to Hermione - smart, loyal, strong, compassionate and totally badass when necessary. We all know Harry Potter would have been screwed without her.
Though she doesn't always show it, Hermione still had a girly feminine side - remember her floaty lilac Yule Ball dress? That's what I see when I look at this polish. Refined and girly with defined sparkle that doesn't dominate. There's a hot pink shimmer that transforms the purple base in different light, it's more of a chameleon than first appearances have you believe. I used three coats to get Hermione looking perfect.
Luna has a slightly satin-y natural finish, but top coat will gloss it up. There is a stunning combination of teeny matte glitters speckled through the base, along with a fine electric blue and pink shimmer. I used three coats for Luna.
Nobody rocks emerald robes quite like Minerva McGonagall. Professor McGonagall is as warm and kind as she is strict. McGonagall has no time for your shenanigans, but she is definitely someone you want on your side when things get tough. She's seen and done it all, and will go to great lengths to protect those she places her loyalties with.
When I saw this polish I knew at once it was going to be inspired by McGonagall, the green is just unmistakable. Flecked with gold and abundant with shimmer, the rich emerald green can take on more vibrant hues in certain lighting. I only needed two coats for Minerva.
Tonks (she wouldn't want me calling her Nymphadora) was a talented metamorphmagus who could change her appearance at will, often choosing to have bright bubblegum pink hair. Oh how I wish changing hair colour was that easy! Tonks was kind of a hipster witch without the dismissive attitude you'll get from most hipsters. I'd say I want to be Tonks, but given the whole wizarding war/dying part I don't know if I'm that keen.
Much like the colour of her hair, this polish is hard to describe as being any one certain colour. In the bottle it is 100% bubblegum pink, however on the nail you'll see some gold and blue sparkle which makes it look like a pastel fuchsia. This also dries to a similar satin finish as Luna, but top coat will gloss it right up. Nymphadora took three coats to smooth out, I found it balding slightly on the second coat but that may just be my impatience. It smoothed out nicely on the third.
All six polishes have a great formula - all went on the nail easily and had little to no streakiness when applying. The flakies and shimmer may be camera shy but they provide a beautiful subtle sparkle that make the finish of each polish uniquely interesting. You don't even need to be a Potter fan to appreciate this collection with a nice mix of colours available.
