Nails of the Week #4

What a week! I'm gearing up for the 31 Day Challenge today, but sneaking in a quick roundup of my nails of the week.

MONDAY: Horrorland

Mckfresh Nail Attire - Horrorland

I have a whole bunch of untried Mckfresh and I'm slowly working my way through them. Horrorland is a lovely flecky navy blue with a perfect formula. Loving all the Goosebumps inspired polish from Mckfresh so far, Kate makes some amazing dark polish!

TUESDAY - THURSDAY: Previously on...

Tuesday saw my Tri Polish Tuesday lightning bolts, and Wednesday and Thursday I luxuriated in my favourite blue, Atlantis to Interzone from Dead Set Babes.

FRIDAY: Femme Fatale

Femme Fatale - Twilight Sorcery (matte)

This weeks theme on AIPAS was vampy - I'm not known for my high vamp looks, so I combined this with the Femme Fatale Fiends Facebook group challenge (so much alliteration!) of Matte It Up. Twilight Sorcery is a deep fuschia thermal that changes to a warm purple when cold, with plenty of gold shimmer. Mattified, I think it looks like luscious suede.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY: Swatching!

Petal Polish - Alyssum over China Glaze - At Vase Value

I spent the weekend sick, sleeping and swatching. My favourite of the weekend swatch session you will see later in the week, but this was a close second.

Alyssum from Petal Polish was sent to me by its lovely creator Christine with a few goodies from her upcoming collection. I swatched it over an approximate butt-tonne of colours over the weekend but this was my favourite - China Glaze At Vase Value. I tried to capture the scattered holo sparkle, but my camera just refused to pick it up on the nail. Be assured it is both delicate and vibrant, and works over almost any base you can think of.

Alyssum is discontinued and available for only $6.50 from the Petal Polish Etsy store!

COMING UP!

I'm starting the 31 Day Challenge tomorrow! I'll be doing this alongside a whole bunch of bloggers and Instgrammers and I'm super excited/terrified! Anyone can join in, just use the hastag #31DC2014 - check out the FAQ put together by Sarah from Chalkboard Nails, then learn how to prepare with this great post by Casey & Jules of Drama Queen Nails.

For September my weekly roundups will solely be 31 Day Challenge roundups, so next week is sure to be colourful.

If you want to keep up with some of the participants check out the InLinkz below!

Favourite Blue Polish - EVER!

Get excited friends! It's time to show my all time favourite blue polish. I've been waiting all month to show you this, and I can only hope I'm doing this polish justice in my photos.

Are you ready?

The trophy goes to...

Dead Set Babes - Atlantis to Interzone

Dead Set Babes - Atlantis to Interzone

A dreamy bottom of the ocean blue, packed with aqua, green and fuschia glitters. This is my heaven in a 12ml bottle.

Dead Set Babes - Atlantis to Interzone

I think you could actually drown in this polish. So much depth, so much sparkle. Above - two coats, the second dabbed on. Opaque enough to give you a pretty defined edge, and avoid VNL. Realistically, 2 coats is perfectly fine unless you are a total glitter whore. And I totally am!!!

Dead Set Babes - Atlantis to Interzone

Just do it, top that baby up with a third coat. The glitters look as though they are floating in that squishy perfect blue jelly base. Top it off a layer or two of a good glossy top coat - I used Peita's Polish Quick Gloss Me Up!, topped off with Dead Set Babes Super Glossy Glitter Top Coat for the smoothest finish possible.

Dead Set Babes - Atlantis to Interzone

Anyone surprised I picked a glitter packed jelly for my favourite blue? No? Good!

Want the bad news? This isn't available anymore! I'm sorry! Maybe if you asked nicely, the lovely Babes of Dead Set Babes will make it again? A custom maybe?

My favourite blues:
Top 5 - Glitter Jellies

Top 5 - Cremes
Top 5 - The Best of The Rest

Tri Polish Tuesday - Primary Graduation!

I made it through the month! Woohoo! Four weeks of nail art in red, yellow and blue, one of those weeks producing one of my favourite manis ever - challenging yourself definitely pays off.

Today is not the best work I've done, but I really really really wanted to finally use the lightning bolt decals I got from Dead Set Babes a little while back.

Lightning Nail Art with Dead Set Decals

Dead Set Decals are the first nail vinyl style products I've used and I love them. They are sturdy and sticky enough to give a nice crisp finish and dont lift or leave residue like my old school self cut sitcky tape method.

Honestly, I don't know what I was going for with the red. I definitely could have worked it in waaaay better.

All up, I'm doing a bit of a happy dance at getting through August with some decent designs and feeling actually inspired to do more nail art. Yay!

Nails of the Week #3

I'm ready for the weekend! Only problem with that is the fact it's Monday tomorrow. It's been a super busy weekend, but I'm finally relaxing and ready to share my week of nail art and swatches.

MONDAY: Be Careful What You Wish For

Mckfresh Nail Attire - Be Careful What You Wish For

It was Mckfresh Monday for me - Be Careful What You Wish For is a gorgeous duochrome from the Goosebumps inspired collection that came out a few months ago. It easily shifts from purple to blue, but also hits magenta and gold on some angles. No black base needed to get the best out of this one.

TUESDAY: Dark Daisies

I feel like I did some of my best work this week for Tri Polish Tuesday, so if you haven't seen my dark blue daisies go have a peek!

WEDNESDAY: Nails for Bella

My beautiful, sweet Bella, beloved family dog of 14 years said farewell to us Tuesday night. She lived with my parents so I didn't get a chance to say goodbye. Bella had leopard print everything, so I did a leopard print mani in her honour. Goodbye beautiful girl, I hope you're being spoilt wildly in puppy heaven x

THURSDAY: Charming nail art

Fan brush nail art with Cult Nails - Charming

I love sitting down with no plans and coming out the other sie with something good. Initially I swatched up Charming from Cult Nails but found it was too sheer after three coats. This was just a few quick swipes with a fan brush over a black base, and some pastel green studs from Born Pretty.

FRIDAY & SATURDAY: First Class Ticket... to space

China Glaze - First Class Ticket

Clearly I was feeling the purples this week, I dug out an untried China Glaze I got in a grab bag and wore this nice simple mani for a full day. I adore this colour, and the formula is fantastic. Quite the grab bag score!

China Glaze - First Class Ticket | MoYou SciFi 07 | Essie - No Place Like Chrome

Not wanting to remove it, but feeling the need to try some stamping, I left it on as the base for some outer space stamping. I stamped with Essie's No Place Like Chrome and used two images from MoYou Sci Fi 07 plate. Then I mattified it, because why not? I love this plate, expect to see more from it!

SUNDAY: Storm Rainbow

Powder Perfect - Storm Rainbow

A quick and dirty photo for a polish that deserves far better. Honestly, just go google Powder Perfect Storm Rainbow and check out some better swatches, because it was a bit gloomy and overcast here today, and my outdoor sans-tripod snap isn't the best.

But you guys - this polish is Amazing (intentional capitalisation). The steely micro glitter with constant flashes of colour is just perfection. It's love. I'll have to re-swatch this along with the others from the anniversary trio and give them the love they deserve.

Favourite Blue Polish - The Best of the Rest

So far this month I've shown you my favourite blue glitter jellies and my favourite blue cremes. This week, no boundaries! I assure you the best of the rest aren't the discarded leftovers - they're just not particularly straight up cremes or glorious glittery jellies.

This week has been a bit rough in non-blog life, so a lot of these are old swatches. Sorry about that!

#5 Pretty Serious - Crystal Lake

Pretty Serious - Crystal Lake

I love Pretty Serious, and I especially love that the creators are horror movie fans. The Killer Fangirls collection that came out for Halloween last year was a wicked treat for horror and glitter fans alike. Crystal Lake, inspired by the Camp Crystal Lake (home of the Friday the 13th series) is a blue glitter fiesta for your nails. While it sits in a sheer tinted base, I wouldn't call it a jelly. Coverage comes from the incredible glitter density.

#4 Shades of Phoenix - Curiouser & Curiouser

Shades of Phoenix - Curiouser & Curiouser

This one surprises me. I'm not known for my love of pastels, but there's something so beautifully intricate and subtle about this polish that keeps drawing me back to it. The gorgeous creamy base is actually jammed with tiny matte blue glitters and not quite as tiny matte blue and yellow glitters. The kicker? Perfectly opaque in only two coats.

#3 China Glaze - Dorothy Who?

China Glaze - Dorothy Who

Alright alright alright, before I go turning this into another indie love-fest (not that there's aything wrong with that) I present to you the shiniest blue I own - that refuses to be captured on film SD card. The blue and silver glitter in this just won't. stop. sparkling. I'm going to have to attempt some lower light to get any reasonable photo of this one. 3 thin coats will get you this gleaming look.

#2 Moonstone Nail Polish - Bluebell Bubblegum

Moonstone Nail Polish - Bluebell Bubblegum

Wheee, it's time for the dots to take centre stage! You may have seen this before in my post on the Magical Treats collection from Moonstone, but here it is again in all it's glory. That almost-purple crelly base just slays me, and then to fill it with dots is basically just asking for me to flail endlessly.

*** This polish has been discontinued, so go get your mitts on it ASAP! ***

#1 Sayuri - Oh, Horsefeathers!

Sayuri - Oh, Horsefeathers!

Honestly, I wanted to re-swatch this one so badly but I just haven't found the time. This has to be one of the most interesting and unique polishes I own. The combination of colours and shapes gives this the most amazing textured look without the pain of a rough finish. Trust me.

Yes, this is full to the brim with bar glitter. Teeny tiny bar glitter that is delicate as a feather, behaves exactly how you tell it and is tamed by one layer of top coat. My favourite thing about this polish is the yellow glitters - they just seem to sink into the polish, almost like an optical illusion. Oh, Horsefeathers! is a pure stroke of genius polish making that makes me eternally thankful I was introduced to indie polish.

Well, that was the best of the rest! Stay tuned next week, where I will reveal my absolute, definitive, number 1 favourite blue polish. It's amazing, I swear! x

Tri Polish Tuesday - Blue Daisies

Clicking with a bit of bright nail art is such a great way to start the week, don't you think? I'm so pleased that I've finally got this primary colours thing wrapped around my little finger. Also all the other fingers.

Blue daisy nail art

After last week's realisation that Red, Blue and Yellow didn't have mean the traditional primary colours we all learn as little ones (yeah total genius brainwave, right?) I've been able to wrap my head around some better ideas.

Like midnight blue daisies!

Blue daisy nail art

Not that blue daisies was so obvious to me. Sometimes the literal part of my brain tries to dominate the creative side, and I have silly thoughts like "but Jae, blue daisies don't grow from red grass. You fool!".

Blue daisy nail art

Well you know what, literal brain? Too bad. On my nails, dark blue daisies grow on red grass. Just accept it.

Nails of the Week #2

Hey polish pals! Monday comes again in only a matter of hours, I don't know that I'm quite ready for another week of work. It's been a busy week for me this week, so fewer opportunities to switch up manis.

Let's see what I did wear though!

MONDAY & TUESDAY: Spotty & Stripey

I got in early on Monday doing my Tri Polish Tuesday nails, and wore them a full two days. I actually didn't want to take them off!

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY: My oldest Shades of Phoenix

Shades of Phoenix - Eris

Over in Phoenix Flames, the Shades of Phoenix fan group on Facebook, Teneil asked us to show our oldest SoP polish. Mine was this spectacular beauty known as Eris. Sadly no longer available, you'll have to trawl blog sales for this one.

FRIDAY: Contrary Polish

Contrary Polish - Aruba

I've been looking at my favourite blue polishes this month so when I noticed what I thought was a blue in my untrieds I thought in the interest of fair consideration to all the blues I should give this one a try. Aruba is definitely more in the teal camp, but it's gorgeous for sure. Beautiful shimmer and lovely formula. Note to self: buy more Contrary Polish.

SATURDAY: Swatching fest

Rimmel - Bronze Princess - Metal Rush collection

Saturday was a sad old rainy day here in Brisbane, so I had a big swatch fest of some untrieds that came from grab bags and clearance bins. This Rimmel was my favourite of the bunch. Bronze Princess, from the Metal Rush collection, is not necessarily going to be everyone's cup of tea but I loved it.

It's one of the most unique duochromes I own, and it's effortlessly shifty. That shift required no weird angle and no black base - its just always there. I'm going to be looking for more of this collection now for sure.

SUNDAY: #mynailsandmynetflix

Mckfresh Nail Attire - Buffy

I may have binge watched a good 5-6 episodes of Buffy on Netflix this afternoon. I've been watching it start to finish for the first time ever and I just got to Season 3 today. I'm hooked - it took me until late Season 2 to really get the love for the show but now I'm in it for the long run. I have to admit, Drusilla is probably my favourite character - she's completely loopy and dopey and I kinda love it.

Anyway, obviously I thought it would be super appropriate to wear Buffy from Mckfresh Nail Attire. Correct choice! The maroon and gold glass fleck swimming in a black jelly base is totally perfect.

Alright Monday, I think I'm ready for you!

Top 5 - Blue Creme Polishes

Oh dear friends, my brain is overwhelmed with choices for my favourite blue cremes! I could have easily made a top 10, and I'll be forever debating my choices in my mind but I guess that's what happens when you try and play favourites with polish. Sometimes it just can't be done.

So here are my top five as it stands at this very exact moment in time!

#5 Revlon - Coastal Surf

Revlon Colorstay - Coastal Surf

I love almost every colour I've tried from the Colorstay range, and this is one of my favourites. A lovely vibrant pastel that is opaque in two thin coats and is perfect for nail art. Most of these polishes I didn't have existing swaches for because I primarily use them for nail art, but they all stand alone beautifully.

I've used Celestial Cosmetics Anti-Matter top coat (a softer, slightly waxy matte) in most of these swatches to bring out the colour.

#4 Sally Hansen - Pacific Blue

Sally Hansen - Pacific Blue

Of course, the now uber-famous original formula of Pacific Blue had to be featured in here somewhere! It was popular for a reason - the gorgeous, slighty dusty cerulean shade of blue and the flawless formula. Two coats gives you this beautiful richness. Again, matte top coat on this one.

I have two backups because I was already halfway through my first one when they were discontinued, when I saw two sitting in my local chemist for $5.95 each I couldn't have them not be mine.

#3 Australis - #playthegame

Australis #playthegame

I'll admit, I purchased this polish not expecting much. I find Australis can be pretty hit and miss with polish, but I can forgive that in a cheaper drugstore cosmetics brand. It immediately impressed me once I swatched it though - it really is about as neon as you could hope for in a pure blue.

The formula is great, very creamy and applies beautifully. Plus, this is another two coater... I'm starting to see a theme here. I didn't wear the matte top coat on this because I wanted to show that, unlike most neons, this dries glossy.

#2 Celestial Cosmetics - Monocerous

Celestial Cosmetics - Monocerous

Indie makers aren't exactly know for their cremes, but when they do take a chance against the mainstream offerings I find I always want to buy them. I already had a few blues in the cobalt range, but none compare to this one.

Dreamy formula and perfect colour, this applies smoothly and self levels like magic on my ridgey nails. Quite obviously, this was the one existing swatch I had of the bunch, hence the different nail shape. I did still use the same matte top coat on it though! Monocerous is still available via Celestial Cosmetics.

#1 Essie - Bobbing for Baubles

Essie - Bobbing for Baubles

Number one is outrageously different to the rest huh? Not only is this my favourite blue creme, it's probably also my favourite Essie polish. It reminds me of one of my favourite polishes when I was younger, which was Revlon Top Speed - Ink. Bobbing for Baubles leans a bit greyer than Ink, but it has that same almost-black look.

So it's almost obvious by now, but it's another two coater with a formula that totally rules. Yep, matte top coat too!

So there are my current favourite blue cremes! Love? Hate? Let me know in the comments x

Tri Polish Tuesday - Spotty and Stripey

Striped and Spotted - Tri Polish Tuesday

OK guys, I'm sticking to my nail art guns and am back for round two. I actually think I've dealt with my primary colours aversion pretty well this week. Yes, mostly by using them sparingly, but also because I really like this pattern.

The inspiration for this striped and spotted mani came from a lovely cushion design from Habitat that was featured on the print & pattern blog, which I discovered via Wondrously Polished. I wish I could actually find the source image again but print & pattern update so frequently it's lost in a sea of design. I'll update with a link once I find it though!

Striped and Spotted - Tri Polish Tuesday

I do love how textile patterns lend themselves so perfectly to freehand nail art - it's not about perfection, but just how the lines fall and colours work together.

Two down, two to go!

Nails of the Week

Hey polish pals! Sunday nights are now home to my Nails of the Week, showing you what I wore this week, and having some general rambles.

So, what did I wear this week?

MONDAY: Nail Art with Femme Fatale Mana Ruby

Colour blocking with Mana Ruby

Freehand colour blocking over this delicious red jelly kicked off the week. Will definitely be trying this look again, the sheer jelly against solid black is right up my alley.

TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY: Tri Polish Tuesday Stripes

Even though I didn't much care for my primary striped nails laziness saw me wearing them for two days, much to the shock of my co-workers. Better start getting some ideas together for the next one!

THURSDAY: All Over You

Bella's Touch Lacquer - All Over You

You'll have seen this stunner from Bella's Touch Lacquer make an appearance in my Top 5 blue jellies yesterday. Completely blew me away, knocked my socks off and rocked my world. Yep, all of that.

FRIDAY: Shades of Phoenix - Sardine

Shades of Phoenix - Sardine/Earl Grey

I changed my nail shape! The first time I've ever had anything but the shape they grow in. I've been having mega peeling and cracking issues lately and I've tried every strengthener under the sun but have only found one that works, and I don't like using it long term. But it's been a while so I'm back on Rejuvacote again and am hoping this shape helps. They do feel a bit tougher not having a flat edge and corners.

The first shade to grace my new nubs was from Shades of Phoenix. I recently grabbed a couple of items from collections I just haven't been able to afford to buy in full. I doubled down on the SoP on Saturday too...

SATURDAY: Selene

Shades of Phoenix - Selene

Maximum vixen power from Shades of Phoenix for the weekend (of... staying in), Selene is from the Up All Night collection and is a gorgeously squishy but opaque black jelly, with a tonne of sparkle. Perfection.

SUNDAY: Holo power from Love thy Polish

Love thy Polish - Green Eyed Monster

I had to work today so out came the Green Eyed Monster. Fitting for my jealousy towards everyone else enjoying their Sunday relaxing and because I worked outside I got to get the most out of the lovely rainbow you see here. One of the last polishes I purchased from Love thy Polish and even though I'm usually on the fence about holo polish I am glad I got this.

Time to polish up for tomorrow!

Top 5 - Blue Jelly Polish

Kicking my favourite things off with a month of beautiful blue! First up is my current obsession - deep blue glitter packed jellies *swoooon*

#5 Smudged Polish - Shake Your Tail Feathers

Smudged Polish - Shake Your Tail Feathers

Shake Your Tail Feathers came in a recent What's In-die Box? and it was immediate love. Sorry, you'll only be able to get your hands on this via blog sales but you can see what's available in the regular range here.

#4 Femme Fatale Cosmetics - Coldwraith

Femme Fatale Cosmetics - Coldwraith

This was on my wish list forever, and I somehow managed to snag one of the last bottles from Femme Fatale when it got discontinued. So glad I did, I love the icy shine set in among the inky dark hexes and greyed out blue jelly.

#3 Moonstone Nail Polish - Midnight Express

Moonstone Nail Polish - Midnight Express

Get excited, this one you can actually get for yourself! Midnight Express was part of the debut collection from Moonstone and is so good it's stuck around. A violet leaning navy that brings out the big sparkle in sunlight.

#2 Bella's Touch Lacquer - All Over You

Bella's Touch Lacquer - All Over You

All Over You is little different - being less obviously a jelly because it's so jam packed with flakies and holo particles. This is like wearing sapphire coating on your nails and it's utterly magical. Find it here.

#1 Emily de Molly - Turbulence

Emily de Molly - Turbulence

Who doesn't love a bit of Emily de Molly? Another long time wish list polish that recently joined my collection, I bit the bullet last time the store was open and I'm so glad I did. I don't think I can say anything about this one that the photo doesn't already say. Depth, colour and variation of shapes is just spot on perfection. This should still be available next time the store is open, keep an eye on the EdM Facebook page for more info on that.

What are your thoughts on blue polish? Do you have and/or love any of these?

Redesign and what's coming up!

Look, I've redesigned again! I stuck with my old dessign for far too long despite not being happy with it at all because I was convinced I would just magic up enough skills to change the elements I didn't like. I'm happier with this look, though I might still tweak it a little.

I now actually have a bit of a plan for my posts so I'm here more frequently. I'll be continuing with Tri Polish Tuesday because it's a bit of fun, and starting a monthly favourites theme where I'll showcase my favourite polishes once a week under a certain colour/type theme. This should run on Thursdays with the first instalment coming this weekend.

Finally, a weekly "what I wore this week" post every Sunday will wrap it all up. Bear with me until I upgrade my camera though - I think it's a dirty lens giving me trouble. Hopefully I'll have a new one in a few weeks.

Hopefully I'll see you around x

Tri-Polish Tuesday - Primary Stripes

What gives, it's been a week since my last nail art post? No, a week since my last post at all??

Oh dear, here are some bright colours to distract you.

Primary Colours

The real reason for my frequent absence is my camera - it's just not shooting well anymore, everything is so grainy and it's not capturing colours properly. I've muddled with as many settings as I'm familiar with but I think it's time to upgrade. My current one was once chewed up by a dog after all.

Aaanyway, after being treated last month with the wonderful combo of pink, green and purple we are now going back to primary! Um wait, not exclamation point. I don't think there is a punctuation mark that sums up my feelings on primary colours. I just don't dig them together.

That said, I'm enjoying Tuesdays too much to just throw in the towel so I will see August as a real challenge for me to make the most of the colours.

Tri Polish Tuesday - Primary Colours

Plus I can't complain too much I actually had a lot of compliments on these today, the best of all being "where do you get your nails done?". Nothing sweeter to my ears than someone thinking my nails were done professionally.
